Hows the walleye fishing In lake saint clair?

Posted on Jul 31, 2009 under Walleye Fishing | 2 Comments

Ill be hitting the lake in another week and was wondering if walleye are being caught or should I focus on Muskie? Is the night bite on yet? Any info anyone could give me would be great.
I fish Erie often, but will be in the Saint Clair area visiting an old friend. Thought Id drag the boat with me and do a little fishing while in Michigan.

no lakes can compare to Lake Erie in walleye fishing, but this summer is better than many in the past. don’t plan on making walleye for dinner, but you just might get lucky enough to find a school or 2. try and check the fishing reports for St. Clair when you get here. Best of luck.

What are the best saltwater fishing reels?

Posted on Jul 31, 2009 under Saltwater Fishing | 8 Comments

I’m looking for a quality fishing reel that will last a long time. I have used almost a dozen of fishing reels over the years and I can’t seem to find a reel that does not break within a year!!!. I fished with a Penn reel and even that failed on me!!!. I don’t want to spend more than $65.00. Any suggestions?

I Fish the Salt water surf real hard, almost every day in season. I have been using 2 Cabelas Salt Striker Metal for 4 years now and they are still 100% mechanically and smooth, the paint is a little chipped but that’s normal. Here are some tips to keeping your reels working great.
1. Unscrew the reel case(were the gears are) and pack it with red or blue bearing grease. I mean PACK IT. This helps keep most of the salt water and sand from getting to your gears and corroding them.

2.Try to rinse your reel with fresh water every-time or at least most of the times you return from a trip, especially if it fall in the sand or water.

3. Clean out the reel grease once a year and pack it with new grease.

You won’t be disappointed with this reel, here it is, make sure its the METAL one, there are two models, the other one has a plastic body and will not last. Oh by the way, if you don’t like the color of the SS Metal, I believe the Pfleugar Medalist is the same reel, I will try to post it. Good Luck

Alaska Fly Fishing Trips: What should I take with me?

Posted on Jul 31, 2009 under Fishing Trips | 4 Comments

Hi there,
Can any one help me… i m planing for fly fishing trip in Alaska. Although i dnt know what things i should take with me. Please help guys!

some of this will have been covered by airflows post.

I spent 3 months living out of a backpack traveling alaska. #1 bug dope, highest deet % you can find. alaska is a mosquito infested swamp, it will be worse than you have heard depending on where/when you go. if it isn’t the skeets it’ll be the noseeums. it gets bad enough to be comical….

spare clothes and make sure you have warm stuff and raingear. I went from wearing everything I had up by denali NP one day to sweltering in 99 degree temps in fairbanks in a couple of hours, expect about anything. I brought along a heavy canvas button up shirt for no good reason and found it was an excellent skeet proof shirt, I wore it the whole summer….

bring an extra bottle of bug dope.

fishing gear, you can catch pretty much everything on flys and will likely use them even if you don’t fly fish. at times you can tie a piece of orange yarn on a hook and catch one after another till your arms are sore. chest waders will be way handy, I’d be in felt soles with cleats. do as much reading now as you can, know how to fish deep for salmon and trout before you get up there. have all the gear you need before you show up.

put an extra bottle of bug dope in you fishing vest…..

now, I wanna talk about bears. when you get off the plane in anchorage there is a giant stuffed bear, you’ll walk right by it on the way through the airport. go and stand next to the stuffed bear, it’s important. note the front paws at head height, see that it stands 12 or more feet tall, make jokes about it, then go out and go fish. everywhere I went in AK, and I went all over people I met would tell me "this is one of the worst bear areas in the state". I heard it everywhere, where ever you go, there will be bears. I camped for 3 months and if I had it to do all over I’d have bought the biggest can of bear spray I can find right off. I kept running across and bending down and putting my hands down in these giant tracks that would dwarf my hand with fingers spread as far as I could….. while walking through dense chin high cranberry bushes along beautiful salmons streams. it’s scary up there, they darted grizzlies in downtown anchorage the year I was up there. take my word for it buy the bear spray.

bring a nice camera, alaska may be a mosquito infested swamp but it is beautiful, take lots and lots of pic’s.

got the bug dope?

What effect does the moon have on ocean fishing?

Posted on Jul 31, 2009 under Fishing Reports | 5 Comments

I live in southern California, and have been out on alot of half day to 2 day trips. I’m planning on going out on a 3/4 day trip out to Catalina Island for calico bass, and yellowtail, as the bite is starting to heat up with the weather. I follow the fish reports, and it’s been hit or miss lately(it’s a little early in the season). The weather is pretty constant now, so thats not an issue. I was wondering if I could improve my odds of having a good trip by going out on a certain day of the moon cycle.

The moon can affect some fish, but not others. It seems that white seabass bite better for a few days before a full moon, and bluefin tuna seem to, too — but other fish don’t seem to care that much.

One theory I heard was that when the night is dark, gamefish can find baitfish by the disturbances in the plankton at night (they glow when disturbed), so that when the moon is full, the fish have a harder time feeding at night, so they continue to feed into the daytime. Another theory is that when the moon is full, the tides are higher, so the currents are stronger, and it’s well known that fish feed better when a current is flowing.

When I was a kid, I actually kept track of the daily fish counts and the moon phases and the water temperature, and I found that (like I said above) the bluefin and white seabass tended to bite better under the full moon.

On the other hand, I’ve had plenty of good trips when the moon or tide were "no good", and bad ones when everything should have been perfect.

My suggestion is to go whenever you can, a weekday if possible (for less crowding on the boat, as well as fewer weekend warriors in their skiffs following the partyboat around and putting down the fish). Watch the reports and pick a boat which consistently makes good catches — a good skipper is more important than anything else. (You can get the breakdowns at http://www.sportfishingreport.com/ )

Right now, it seems that an overnight trip to Clemente would give you a better chance at the yellowtail.

I am trying to start a rod and reel repair business and this model is one that I have no links or information on. It may be an obsolete model. I would also like any info on reaching the manufacturer of this reel.

Does anyone have information on a really good fishing guide on Lake Texoma?

Posted on Jul 31, 2009 under Fishing Guides | 3 Comments

I have fished with a couple and not really satisfied. Looking at the guides web sites, it seems all claim to be the best guide on Lake Texoma.

I have had similar results with guides on Lake Texoma. For the past couple of years I have used Doug Keeter who fishes out of Highport Marina. He is a lot of fun and I have caught a lot of fish each time I’ve fished with him. His web site is http://stripermaster.com

Posted on Jul 31, 2009 under Fishing Boats | 1 Comment

I have a fasination with model fishing boats, rocks, and clocks What do you think it means

Why does it have to mean anything?

My partner is fascinated by trees.
I have a fascination for the Wild West.
Most people have fascinations with something.

These items seem like a healthy interest to me.
Is there someone in you family with an association to the ocean?
