Shown here is “Utopia” on the Mattel Electronics Aquarius computer. This is an outstanding port from the Intellivision version of the game. The port was programmed by Stephen Roney of the Blue Sky Rangers. www.boardgamegeek.com This is the only Aquarius game/software programmed in the C programming language. I have very fond memories of playing this game with my brothers back in the 80′s. We got a real kick out of the idea of ruling our own little island. Today, my sons enjoy playing this one with me. We still follow the same play patterns that my brothers and I did: -cooperate to trap the pirate ships -buy a lot of fishing boats -fill the island with sufficient forts, houses, schools & hospitals -fill remaining areas with factories -continue building the fleet of fishing boats -attempt to get a school of fish “stuck” under a pile of fishing boats. When successful, this can lead to hundreds of gold bars, and may garble the display. (if you get too many fishing boats the game gets confused, and some fishing boats become phantoms. ie you can’t control them) -With the last few rounds remaining, spread all the fishing boats around the screen -use your substantial treasury to attack each other with as many rebels as possible -just before the game ends, release the pirate ships -watch the storms and pirates destroy all you created!!! Lots of fun Of course there is still pride in who finishes with the highest score. I had the fortune to meet the programmer, Mr. Roney at the …
Around late February, at certain points along the Southern California coast, market squid move in from deep water to shallower areas to spawn. Commercial fishing boats track these migrations and congregate to harvest the massive build-up. These pictures were shot off of La Jolla Shores, CA. We did not get in the water to film the underwater shots. The day we filmed the boats were actively fishing so there was danger from boat traffic. Also, seal bombs were being dropped in the water. Thus to get the underwater footage, we lowered a weighted videocam by rope and let it dangle beneath our boat. Hence the reason squid randomly come in and out of shot and the camera appears to bob up and down. These shots would not have been possible without the kind cooperation of the crew of the Kamryn Kate. Thanks guys! I very much appreciate you allowing us to approach so close to film. This video is one of a series that records the efforts of local San Diego divers to document the 2009 squid run in and around La Jolla Canyon, CA. A complete description of their activities can be found at www.sunray-productions.com/squid.html.
