I remember when the movie stars were in town making this film back in the mid-70′s…some scandalous goings-on! For Key Westers, it’s a fabulous trip down memory lane looking at our town before Mr. Buffett put us on the map. Unlike so many film adaptations, this is one where the movie is as good, perhaps superior to, the book.

…Of McGuane’s novels, “92 in the Shade” is perhaps my favorite. His movie adaption of this work is true to the quirky characters developed in his novel, and recreates the unique ambiance of the Florida Keys/Key West experience, and the sense of his character’s fated participation in a script set in a cosmic “play” of Life that was also such a pleasurable part of the book.
Cast selections were fitting…and this was one movie experience that left me with the same feeling as the prose, although the paths taken in the telling were quite different. I feel that McGuane’s direction was essential to this success and the capturing of the subtle nuances of this story on film.
An interesting independant film. McGuane’s fans should find it true to the tale…

I caught this film on Cable last week. I usually don’t remember whole scenes of dialog on one viewing, But this one really stays with you!
Quirky plot, strange characters, gorgeous location. Excellent acting. And fishing.
If you like these things, and you like low-key indie cinema, your probably going to like this movie a whole lot.

92 in the shade was a great book and now mcguane has given us a great movie. the movie is funny, scary and a microscopic look at the last ‘weird outpost.’ a wonderful movie.

The plot is that a Fla. Keys fishing guide is going to kill a young man who wants to be a fishing guide like him. What….! There are only two fishing guides at this marina. The weaker guide is encouraging the young man (Peter Fonda) to become a guide while instigating the better guide (Warrren Oates) to kill this new rival. That will leave him as the only guide left when the other guy is arrested for murder. That’s it! Typically poor acting by a young Peter Fonda, his character has no substance, he just says his lines, however he is surrounded by fine co-stars who bring some entertainment to the weak script. The subplots are as ridiculous as the main plot, and would be entirely written off as delirious if it were not set in Key West. I should know, I’m a Key West local (six generation).
