The higher the gear ratio the faster the bait can be retrieved, but the harder it is to bring a large fish in, especially on heavy line. The high gear ratios are good for lure fishing with baits that require fast retrieval speeds.

The ratio given for a fishing reel is number of turns of the spool:number of turns of the handle. As a result, the higher the gear ratio, the faster the retrieve. The high gear ratio also makes it difficult to retrieve line when there is pressure from a large fish on the other end.
As most deep sea/sport fishing situations do not involve lure retrieval (they’re usually bait fishing or trolling) lower gear ratios are preferred. Some high end reels will accomodate this with two "speed" settings which allow you to alter the gear ratio depending on whether you are retrieving a lure or fighting a fish.
