I am looking to purchase a fishing reel, freshwater, but don’t know when to. I fish in the summer and don’t know if the best deals are at the end of the fishing season, now, or at the beginning.

I agree that buying fishing supplies either at the end of the season or before the season begins works best. However, the real trick is to find a Trout Unlimited show or other fly fishing event at these times of year. I usually go to one in early March–before the season begins. There are tons of vendors that sell excellent equipment at very reasonable rates. Some are trying to get a jumpstart on the season; others are fishermen that aren’t trying to make a ton off customers.
The other benefit of these shows is that you can load up on discount flies and tackle.

When they go on sale is always the best time to buy fishing gear.
Seasons have nothing to with it, whether it’s Christman time, Thanksgiving, or what, certain places have sales all the time.

Bass Pro Shops have great deals around Christmas, and during the spring.
Don’t leave Walmart out of the question either. I’ve noticed that my local Walmart gets a fair amount of pretty decent equipment during the holidays. Don’t buy the normal Walmart stock, like the 30-50 dollar setups; instead, look for higher end Abu Garcias, quantums, and Daiwa. I’ve seen Abu Garcia Revos and nice Quantum KVD series reels at Walmart on occasion.

With the end of the year close and holidays coming up… you will see sales on reels if you look around, most places are making make room for new models with the new year coming. Also closeouts you can find just about any time of the year… you just have to keep an eye out for these, closeouts doesn’t necessarily mean the product is no longer made… sometimes for an unknown reason a store will decide to stop carrying certain reel models and put them on sale.

like so many things, they are cheapest the day after thanksgiving. bass pro has HUGE sales that day. gets a little crazy in there.

This is what I’ve run into from Cabela’s and Bass Pro websites over the last year.
They have some really good deal’s around Christmas time. Almost everything is on sale.
BUT! I went back to their websites in February. They were basically giving stuff away. They were selling rods and reels at clear out prices to make room for the new stuff coming in the spring. Easily get 50 to 70% off with free shipping.
