I am going fishing for trout that are approx. 1 lb. What type and size of hook would you use?
Posted on Aug 12, 2009 under Fishing Reports | 5 CommentsThe fishing report saids the fish are hitting worms and powerbait together.
I would use a small hool since a 1lb trout is a smaller fich probably 6 -8 inches. Plain hook and worm or a spinner bait would probably be best. If you want some real fun though you should fly fish for them

If you are fishing to keep them, I would recommend a small treble hook, size 12 or smaller, then wrap the bait around that. If you will be releasing them do not use the treble hook, use a small size 12, 14, standard hook.
I prefer to flyfish, but if you don’t have the gear, this should work for power bait or worms

You wanna get yourself equipped with a 5 to 5’6" Ultra Light Rod, some 4lb. test line.
As for the hook size, id go with any where from a size 10 to as small as a 14. Gamagatsu hooks are the best IMO. If you plan on releasing the trout, buy barbless hooks, if you cant find them just take some plyers and flatten the barbs. Get yourself a float or some split shots depending if your fishing a river or pond. Put the split shot about 18" above your hook and throw some powerbait or mealworms on the hook. Cast Upstream into the pools and let them drift downstream. If using a bobber, put about 24" inches above the hook and cast out. Have fun..

For trout of that size, I would go with a size 10-16 hook. They are small hooks, but they are appropriate for fish of that size. Whether you plan on keeping or releasing fish, you should plan accordingly. Keeping fish = barbed hooks. Releasing = barbless hooks. Treble hooks are better at hooking fish, but single point hooks are better once they’re on.
If you want to make it easy on yourself, you can find many sizes already snelled, meaning already tied to line. I would use between 2 and 6lb line.
Personally, I use a size 14 hook (either trebble or single point), which is very small, and I make sure to use enough bait to at least cover the hook (considering how small the hook is,).
You may want to invest in a simple hook remover/disgorger. Check the link…http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10151&catalogId=10001&langId=-1&partNumber=31852&hvarTarget=search&cmCat=SearchResults
