Casting Networks: Mobile fishing in India

Posted on Sep 01, 2011 under Fishing | 25 Comments

Mobile phones are increasingly sophisticated these days, but there is one use you might not have considered — catching fish. Indian trawler crews used to rely on luck for a good catch. But it is a different kind of net-work that is funding their fortunes — India’s fishermen find mobiles are where the money is. Mohan Kumar revs up his engine for a day of fishing off the coast of Kerala — the southernmost state in India. “I studied in school until the 7th grade but then I had to leave school because we were not economically well off, so I had to help my dad with fishing,” says Mohan Kumar, a fisherman from Kerala. Kumar is one of thousands of fishermen in the state who wake up at one o’clock to earn a living. For decades, fishermen like Kumar, relied on luck and prayer in order to find a good catch, but all that has changed since the introduction of the mobile phone in the state more than ten years ago. When I saw this video for some reason I thought they would actually be using the phone to catch fish, like attaching a line to it. I wonder if there’s a app for that?

@Helveticum13 —-you mean to say British rule, you probed our ass for 200 years, now we would probe for ass for the unending future. Our indian brothers in britian have captured all important economic activities there , and now we would love to loot you and shaft your asses!!

  14. Helveticum13 Says:

@abh3092 it sure had enough capability to probe your asses for 200 years ;)

  15. Gmmaverick Says:

I wonder what the impact of it will be, if any. I mean for the fish. If they catch too much, it could decrease the fish population to dangerous levels? I don’t know, just wondering…

  16. abh3092 Says:

  20. abh3092 Says:

@Helveticum13 –you mean to say India brought space technology from a country like Britain which does not even have the capability to launch 1 gram of thing into space, leave alone sending 1200 kg probe into moon.

  21. abh3092 Says:

@Tuskarr –those people in the video are not peasants!! they are fisherman!!

  22. abh3092 Says:

@CaptMidn1ght — indians are Caucasians, all Caucasians are hairy!!

  23. abh3092 Says:

@YouTheory — stupid donkey! india is the largest producer of condoms, india is a democracy and cannot force one child policy on it’s people.India’s population growth is already slow!

  24. YouTheory Says:

India Needs to implement A ONE CHILD policy, To many people = no food for the rest, these fish look like they barely 2 weeks old …. over fishing will leave no fish and greed for money destroys the environment. USA send more condoms for them and establish One child policy like china …

  25. GreatBigBore Says:

I hope they’ll manage the resource rather than overexploiting it.
