What are the best saltwater fishing reels?

Posted on Jul 31, 2009 under Saltwater Fishing | 8 Comments

I’m looking for a quality fishing reel that will last a long time. I have used almost a dozen of fishing reels over the years and I can’t seem to find a reel that does not break within a year!!!. I fished with a Penn reel and even that failed on me!!!. I don’t want to spend more than $65.00. Any suggestions?

I Fish the Salt water surf real hard, almost every day in season. I have been using 2 Cabelas Salt Striker Metal for 4 years now and they are still 100% mechanically and smooth, the paint is a little chipped but that’s normal. Here are some tips to keeping your reels working great.
1. Unscrew the reel case(were the gears are) and pack it with red or blue bearing grease. I mean PACK IT. This helps keep most of the salt water and sand from getting to your gears and corroding them.

2.Try to rinse your reel with fresh water every-time or at least most of the times you return from a trip, especially if it fall in the sand or water.

3. Clean out the reel grease once a year and pack it with new grease.

You won’t be disappointed with this reel, here it is, make sure its the METAL one, there are two models, the other one has a plastic body and will not last. Oh by the way, if you don’t like the color of the SS Metal, I believe the Pfleugar Medalist is the same reel, I will try to post it. Good Luck

You need to spend more money my friend. Sorry. Thats how it goes. You get what you pay for. I learned this a long time ago. If I don’t have the money to buy good gear I don’t waste my money. Don’t get me wrong they could last if you follow up each fishing trip with lubrication and cleaning but who wants to do that? Spend an extra $40. It’s not like fishing for blue gill and crappie on the neighbors little pond. I’ve been using the same Penn reels for years without fail. They are all purchased between $129 and $180.

Penn reels hold up the best. Yet, they’re expensive. To check them out, go to http://www.pennreels.com

penn reels should last a lifetime if you take care of them you probably did not take good care of them if they broke in a year my dad has 3 penn reels that he has had for over 20 years and they are still in good condition and i have had my penn reel for 4 years in very good condition so give penn another chance and take real good care of it by taking it apart and putting petroleum jelly in all the gears

you get the very most from your money with penn. just keep it clean and don’t use monofilament line on a plastic spool. the squidder will out cast any spinning reel and the jigmaster has the balls to take on all but the very largest S/W species. they don’t come with all the bells and whistles but they come with the guts. l’m using my dad’s reels, some of which are almost 30 years old. and if a penn did fail you, something was definitely …uh…fishy. P.S. squidders and jigmasters are right in your price range.

Don’t listen to Tbone you can get a shimmano 5000 for $20 or $30 I have had one since 1999 and have never had to grease or oil it, because shimmano builds their reels very tight with no leaks that will void the grease and oil.

P.S: a expensive reel wont catch you more fish

    Good luck! ;)
