what’s a good saltwater spinning reel to use for inshore and boat fishing (mahi, cuda, etc)?

Posted on Nov 30, 2009 under Saltwater Fishing | 3 Comments

was wondering what kind of reel to get. have a 24 ft boat that the rod will be used on and will be considered light tackle for barracuda, dolphin, and other smaller gamefish as well as inshore saltwater fishing for reds, trout, sheepshead, etc. i am having a custom 7 ft rod built to match the reel. thanks!

I have several reels but use my Okuma’s mostly now!
For lighter fish I use my Okuma Inspira 55 spooled with 12lb mono or 20lb braid Okuma Inspira 65′s spooled with 17lb to 20lb mono or 30lb braid! These reels have good capacity for line and the drags have tested time well for me and they wont break the bank account.

Lew’s (Childre) Saltwater Reel if you can find one. Thet are the BEST! A Calcutta is almost as good, but more expensive.

i’ve used a shimao stradic w/ power pro strictly in saltwater. I think it’s the 2500 model. The reel has stood up to the wear and tear of saltwater although i’m not positive this model is made for it. I tend to stick w/ Shimano, Penn and Quantum for my upper end stuff.
