Why is it that fishing companies dont really specialize lure making for saltwater fishing?

Posted on Oct 29, 2011 under Saltwater Fishing | 7 Comments

Most of the time when I fish on the ocean I see people and myself use bait. The only time I use lures, jigs, and etc is when catching schooling fish such as smelt, mackeral, and etc

There’s a few companies that make specialized lures for saltwater. They’re usually bigger and made with heavier-duty hardware. And companies that make marlin and sailfish lures, also…

Rapala, Rebel, and Cotton Cordell are just three that I can name that make special plugs for saltwater.

There are several companies that specialize in saltwater lures and tackle, for example Mirrolure was designed for flats fishing. Alot of other companies have saltwater lines to go along with their freshwater stuff, for example Berkley gulp saltwater series, strikeking has a huge saltwater line of products. I spend alot of time saltwater fishing and almost never use natural bait.

Most companies in the world specialize only in Saltwater lures.
It may be just an coincidence that you see a lot of fresh water bait, but more than 75% of all lures made in the world are specifically made for salt water.

The Berkley Gulp line has several salt water lures. They work good on flounder, redfish, and speckled trout.

Bomber makes a saltwater line. I noticed when I lived in FL that inshore salt anglers used lures but the further out they went to sea that bait took over.

There are plenty of companies which make saltwater lures. However, their markets are small — lures which work in southern California often won’t work off Florida, and vice versa, so you don’t hear much about them. On the other hand, freshwater bass fishing is a nationwide interest, so companies which make lures for bass tend to have lots of publicity, so even those of us who don’t fish for bass hear about all the bass lures.

Next time you go saltwater fishing, stop in a local saltwater tackle shop, and you’ll probably see lots of artificials for sale. You see most people fishing with bait simply because it’s an easier way to catch fish, but there are plenty of people who catch lots of fish on artificials.

More bass fishermeen , tournaments and stuff like that mean more money for the companiees , but that is changing a little with the redfish tournaments etc.
